Border double-cross
THIS IS THE story of two star-crossed lovers, not separated by family warring, as Romeo and Juliet were, but by a border created by governments. This is the story of how a couple, so much in love, have followed every legal directive, have spent more than $11,000, have waited nearly three years with the confidence of youth, only to have their hope of being together on this side of the border dashed to the ground.

Simple act of kindness
I WAS OUT to dinner with my daughter and two sons. Katie was visiting for a short week over the Christmas holidays, and this was our one splurge. Of all the things I like to do, I enjoy going out to dinner with my children most of all. That night I wore a long, red, wrap-around skirt with a white sweater, and my metallic maroon earrings made by an artist in Iceland, a gift from a relative who travels all over the world. I felt elegant.

Trophy buck twist

I HAVE NOTHING against hunting. In fact, I like wild meat. My son Dan has brought home a wild turkey every spring for years, and at least one deer each fall. I never understood, though, the hunter’s practice of strapping his kill on top of his pick-up in full view, then driving around town to show it off. It always seemed barbaric to me.

A LIFETIME HAS passed, and along with it, Myrt Kriescher, who lived with her family two backyards over. There she was at her ironing board, singing with gusto along with Patsy Cline, running her iron back and forth over her husband’s white, cotton shirts.
