[White stationery letter enclosed]

Sunday, Aug. 11, 1945

My dear Henry:

We received your letter a few days ago and surely enjoyed hearing from you. I sent you some magazines and I thought I could send them first class mail so that you could soon get them but there is a new postal regulation that any one in the Navy or Marines overseas must make a request for magazines, so I had to send them in a package. Now when you get them they will all be old but maybe you will enjoy them anyway. I sent Jimmie 15 or 20 packages after he left the States last November and I don’t believe he ever received any of them. Several have been returned to us and all of our letters we wrote in Feb. and March have been returned. It is so hard to think of him and what he had to go thru away out there on that terrible island. I’ll never get over it as long as I live.

I’m sure he loved to talk with you especially since you had visited in New Orleans, he had so many happy times there but I believe he enjoyed the country around Purvis most. He loved to hunt and swim and that is the main sport around here.

He was a good sweet boy to us, but in his short 19 years he had lots of experiences and made lots of friends from all over the country. Did you know Johnny Desmul? I’ve had several letters from his mother. He was in the same Replacement with Jimmie and they were good friends. Johnny died of wounds March 6th the day after Jimmie was killed.

It looks like the war is about over. I wish it could have been over six months ago. I’ll be glad for the rest of the boys tho for it to end.

Henry I surely hope you can get duty in New Orleans and will let us know when you are there so we can meet you. I would love to meet your wife too--and if you don’t get duty there we want you to come to see us some day. It would really be a pleasure to know you.

Write to us again soon.

With best wishes from
Mr. and Mrs. Daly

Dearest “Sweet”:

Received 3 letters today and as you asked, the mail service from States is a little slower now. The occupation force has priority on mail I guess.

Am leaving the camp about next Wed. or Thurs. for Pearl Harbor or Honolulu, for transportation back to States. Guess there are about 20 or 30 going back with enough points. Guess I might as well go out, but stay in reserve status. Kind of a hard question to answer, because I don’t know for sure what I’ll do on the outside. Do you? I do know we won’t stay in N.C.

I won’t have much money when I hit the States because I only have about $50 or $60 now won’t need much though, so when I hit the mainland I can call up or wire for money.

I didn’t think you had any money left, because I thought you bought those clothes. I even wrote the folks to send me some money when I wire for it. It really don’t matter much just where I get it just so I’m not broke.

Now this might all change in a day or so, but I was on base yesterday, and they are closing out our records. So its pretty definite that we will leave next week.

That radio news you heard was the 4th Marine Regiment, not Division. Although the 5th Div. is in Japan now. They were on a rest camp on an island about 125 miles from Maui. You must have misunderstood the broadcast.

No, those shoes are Japanese Imperial soldiers shoes. I found them in a cave on Iwo and they had never been worn, or I wouldn’t have sent them to you. The women do wear little wooden shoes and when they are inside of their homes, they go barefooted. Tell all Hello. Remember “I love You”

Love – Kisses
Hank

Dearest “Sugar”

Well tomorrow I’ll be an old man, almost. I’ll be 24 hrs. or I mean years. Almost as old as you are aren’t I?

No Lottie I have been thinking it over, and I think I will go out. I could have made 1st class last week, if I wasn’t coming back to States. There were a few openings for rates in the Div. so I gave it to some other kid that was staying here. He needed it worse than I anyway. So thats that.

Yes, the Japanese people here on the island do my laundry and serving too. I have all my khaki laundered now, all set for Stateside. It will save you doing it, aye what!!!

Don’t know for sure just how I am going to get all my clothes back. I had 4 or 5 sea bags. It has been sort of a long problem. I threw away a lot of clothes or I mean gave to “Gooks” or so called Japs.

When I get back we will take a vacation up in northern part of Wis. Don’t know what we will take it on, but we will anyway. Guess our credit is good, I hope.

Don’t know for sure just where I will go first just depends on which coast we come to. If its west coast, its close to go to Wis. and then you could come up there. I’ll send you a telegram and give you the scoop. I hope to be in States within two a half weeks or less. Just depends on what type of ship we’re on.

I received three letters Sept. 22 dated Sept. 17-18-16. That's good service isn’t it?

Well Honey I haven’t much to say except I love you and be good.

Greet all Love + Kisses
Hank Sime
